The National Trust has kicked off its 130th Anniversary with a bang by revealing its plans to create 250,000 hectares of nature-rich landscape by 2050. The UK is one of the most nature depleted countries in the world and these plans are working to address the current climate and nature crisis.

The nature-rich landscapes will be equivalent in size to 1 and a half times the size of Greater London. The ambitious project would create larger tracts of landscape involving the planning of more than 90,000 trees on 193 acres of disused farmland in Merseyside. The work will help to create nature networks allowing biodiversity to thrive with examples including the Mersey Forest Network.

The National Trust has explained some of the work will be completed on their own sites and through new acquisitions. It will also involve working with environmental organisations, famers, communities and individuals who have land that can be improved.

Described as a “moonshot” and “audacious” target the National Trust believes it is possible to achieve based on their extensive mapping work done over the past decade and the partnerships and relationships they have built.

As part of our commitment to tackling climate change and improving biodiversity in the UK we have donated £100.00 to the National Trust. The money will be used towards wildlife and nature projects.
