Unite In Aviva Welcomes Aviva's New Neonatal Care Leave and Pay Policy
Unite In Aviva warmly welcomes Aviva's recent announcement introducing a compassionate and progressive Neonatal Care Leave
Stuart Thomas | 6th April 2025

Unite the Union warmly welcomes Aviva's recent announcement introducing a compassionate and progressive Neonatal Care Leave (NCL) and pay policy, set to begin from 6 April 2025. This significant step forward demonstrates Aviva’s commitment to supporting parents through challenging times, aligning closely with our ongoing campaign for better work-life balance and enhanced parental support. Although the government itself implemented this law across the board, it's encouraging to see Aviva act fast and appropriately.
Under the new policy, parents whose babies require neonatal care within the first 28 days after birth can now access up to 12 weeks of additional paid leave. This leave is provided on a one-for-one basis: for each complete week of neonatal care, parents receive an equivalent week of leave, easing the pressure during what can often be an emotionally and physically stressful period.
Importantly, this neonatal leave is additional to existing maternity, paternity, adoption, and other parental leave entitlements, ensuring parents don't have to sacrifice other essential time with their child.
Statutory neonatal care pay is available for eligible employees with at least 26 weeks of continuous employment, providing financial peace of mind during critical moments. The flexibility offered—allowing leave to be taken immediately or at a later date within a specified timeframe—also empowers families to make the best decisions for their circumstances.
We at Unite the Union warmly welcome this proactive measure, acknowledging it as a progressive policy that genuinely places employee well-being and family support at its heart. We commend Aviva for recognising the needs of working families and setting an excellent example within the industry.
Unite representatives across Aviva locations are ready to support members in understanding and accessing this new entitlement, ensuring its smooth implementation and maximum benefit for all eligible colleagues.
