No Mow May & World Bee Day 20th May – May Comms (Part 3)

Bees at Work

Bee Inspired by Nature to Nourish Us All.

Welcome back to the concluding chapter of our No Mow May and World Bee Day educational series. By now, we hope you've had ample time to learn about our furry pollinators, the lifeblood of our agricultural systems.

Unfortunately, they are currently facing threats from habitat destruction, the loss of flowers and plants in our gardens, unsustainable farming practices, and climate change.

Pollination is essential for agriculture, supporting the production of more than 75 percent of the world's crops, including fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds. In addition to increasing crop yields, pollinators improve food quality and diversity.

But don’t worry as you don’t have to be a Beekeeper to protect the bees or to get involved on World Bee Day ( 20th May ).

Did you know that Bees are more than just pollinators – they are direct indicators of the health of our environment? Their behaviours and population trends offer insights into our climate and ecosystems.

Can you take some action this May and protect our fury pollinators?

Here are a few easy ways to get involved:

  • Limit chemicals and pesticide in your garden and opt for natural alternatives

  • Identify and then protect nesting sites for ground bees

  • Plant more wildflowers and native crops instead of having water thirsty grass

  • Buy local honey to support local beekeepers by visiting local farmers markets

  • Set up bee/ bug houses in your garden

  • Organise a World Bee Day event at your workplace or with your local communities – please share your day on your social media platforms with #WorldBeeDay

  • Educate yourself via World Bee Day material as well as talking to your local beekeepers / local honey producers

  • Spread the word – Inform, educate and engage as many people as you are able and share the information from these communications and the World Bee Day site

Share with us how you are / have been supporting No Mow May & World Bee Day by emailing uniteinsheffield@aviva.com

In our ongoing efforts to fight climate change and enhance biodiversity, we have funded the restoration of 11 square meters of habitat in the UK through Ecologi in celebration of World Bee Day.
