The People's Plan For Nature
Part 2
In late September 2022 the UK public was invited to discuss why nature mattered to them and what their vision was for the future. 30,000 responses were received back from various households across the UK

In Part 1 of this series, we discussed why the Plan was needed and created, we will now look at the common outcomes that the public demanded.
People got involved because they wanted to protect nature and appreciate the joy, wonder and fulfilment it offers. Others believe that nature provides a source of healing, and some are linked to nature by through their culture, heritage and pride of place.
Following an information gathering exercise in the initial phase, the People’s Assembly for Nature was created to discuss the information received from the public. 103 people took part across a wide range of socio-economic and demographic backgrounds.
The meetings took 36 hours over 4 weekends including 40 academic speakers as well as case studies and testimonials along with group sessions etc.
The assembly set out five core outcomes:
-
Cities to be linked with nature increasing greater access to greenspace in the urban environment as well as improving air quality and health outcomes.
-
An increase in biodiversity and nature rich landscapes with native species seeing a restoration by 2050 with more protections for wildlife and habitats.
-
Environmentally friendly low carbon urban buildings and renewable energy development. Combined with the creation of nature corridors for wildlife to move safely in all spaces as well as rewilding agricultural lands across the UK to allow for nature to do self-regulate.
-
Humans to stop its exploitation of the natural environment – creating harmonious relationships between human activity and wildlife – nature is not to be extracted and depleted anymore – giving a value to nature and wildlife ensuring its protection.
-
More environmental policies to empower people, give nature a voice during policy making and increase the penalties for crimes against nature.
